When I have made offers and then agreed a higher salary I have usually advised to do it only once. If the applicant comes back again with their hand out if they are not "rare/hard to fill" I usually advise not to meet their demands and most managers have agreed. On the occassions I have not heeded my own advice or ceded to a local managers request we have usually lived to regret it.

Some how the relationship gets off to a bad start and the recruit is a pain.

I would not hesitate to withdraw the offer if there is an alternative candidate.

Good luck to you - but you are turning down taking over an established set up in a company you wanted to work for a pretty elastic proposition. It may depend on your confidence and attitude to risk.
