Giving notice at work

Hi can anybody help me here, so basically i have been at my job for 1.5 years and have really not enjoyed any of it , its shift work and i 4 days a week but am lucky if i get one weekend off a month.

Anyway i have been offered a new job which is mon-fri 9-5 and i can walk there so its perfect and i think i would enjoy the job.

They have asked if i can give 3 weeks notice instead of the 4 i am meant to give, I asked my manager and she was extremely angry, saying im just going to keep jumping from job to job forever, saying i should have told her i was looking for a new job etc etc then finally she said she has wrote the rota up until April so i will have to work this (6 weeks)
I said there was no way i could do this and we didnt speak again that day (over a week ago)

Now she is saying i can leave on the 18th which is the day i wanted but i will have to do the next weekend , this will mean between the 2 jobs il have to work 15 days in a row which will be really hard for me, i jsut dont no what to do

16,17,18th current job. 19-23 new job 24-25 current job 26-30 new job.

I have known lots of people in my current job to leave with 2 weeks notice but she just wont let me- are you allowed to leave without doing the full 4 weeks?

Thanks

Check your contract of employment. That will tell you what your notice period is.

It does say 4 weeks, but is it essential? i would be giving 25 days rather than 28 days out of my rota there is only 2 days i should be doing, i just didnt think it would cause so much conflict.

    well, you have 2 choices.

    - work the 15 days. it is a hectic schedule, but plenty of people do this reguarly, especially those with 2 jobs.

    - just don't go in or call in sick for the last couple of days. it's up to you, but if you think you won't get a reference from your boss anyway i'd say "why not?". I really don't think they'd take any further action against you for the sake of a couple of days.

it sounds like your boss is a bit of a moo anyway and if I was in your shoes i definitely wouldn't feel I had to display her any loyalty after being spoke to like that.

    It's your call.

It can only be less than 4 weeks at the management's discretion, and it seems like she doesn't want to play ball.

You could ask to take any untaken leave accrued, but again, its down to management discretion.

The prospective new employer is being a bit cheeky tbh.

It also all depends on how badly you need the reference, it wouldn't be the first time i've seen someone walk out and never return - although be warned that could leave you liable if they incur costs. However what's your situation with leave like, if you have leave you can request it but to be honest i think the 4 weeks is the only real option here.

You only need to give the notice you agreed to give as per your employment contract. Realistically though, if you don't work on the 24th and 25th, there's not a lot they can do. Your current manager sounds like a right snotty cow, no wonder you want to leave!

Catty, check your contract for your terms of notice period. However, in light of the way your management dealt with it l would treat them with the same respect....(and l say this as an employer!)

Tell them you'll work the last weekend, then ring in sick on those days. ;)

Petty, but hardly the crime of the century.

Good luck in your new job. x

    Happy moneysaving all.

I would feel to bad to just leave and not do the shifts i am meant to as its a small team and i know they would struggle if they were short. I am forever doing overtime, shift swaps etc and just feel its unfair that its came to this all over 3 days

I'd agree with the call in sick option. It's not as if you'll actually be working in your new job on the "sick" days and it sounds like the current employer deserves no more.
If you need to explain the sick days, put it down to mental exhaustion.

    Edit:
Your team will cope, probably won't blame you, and you just need to do what's in your interest.

You sound a lovely person and maybe the harriden sounding boss is taking advantage of this?

Is there really no-one else that could do some overtime or shift swaps and step in for you?

    Happy moneysaving all.
