  • Thanks for the link, I just bought a copy - I also used the promotion code 'BEST10' and got an extra 10% off:j
  • Nothing to do with the price but its gotta be said that firefly is one of the little known sci-fi gems of the last few years. Great scripts and good stroylines - it was cancelled before the Americans gave it a chance to build up a following.

I know it's all a matter of personal taste but this is, in my humble opinion, a fantastic series that sadly was never continued after the first 14 episodes. For £11.99, it's an absolute steal!

Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel. Set five centuries in the future, it is a show where the mysterious personal pasts of the crew of the tramp spaceship Serenity continually surface. In fact, it's a Western in space where the losers in a Civil War are heading out to a barren frontier. Mal Reynolds is a man embittered by the war, yet whose love of his comrades perpetually dents his cynicism--even in the 14 episodes that exist we see him warm to the bubbly young mechanic Kaylee, the preacher Book, the idealistic doctor Simon, even to the often demented River, Simon's sister, the psychic result of malign experiments.

Firefly is also about adult emotional relationships, for example Kaylee's crush on Simon, the happy marriage of Mal's second officer Zoe and the pilot Wash, the disastrous erotic stalemate between Mal and the courtesan Inara. Individual episodes deal with capers going vaguely wrong, or threats narrowly circumvented; character and plot arcs were starting to emerge when the show was cancelled. Fortunately, the spin-off movie Serenity is planned; and in the meantime, what there is of Firefly is a show to marvel at, both for its tight writing and ensemble acting, and the idiocy of the executives who cancelled it.

Created by Joss Whedon (of Buffy fame), it's a great character study and by the time you get to the last quality episode you'll be desperate for more! Your only salvation will be in the Serenity film which was made to tie up some loose ends. Check out the reviews at Amazon if you're still fighting the urge.

Highly recommended! You too will lament it's demise... :o

    NB

If you go for this package, see Serenity last. ;)

I highly recommended this show, it's not normal geeky sci-fi (not that there's anything wrong with that), it's a highly polished western in space where everything is far from perfect. I am not someone that becomes a fan of a TV series, but this series is genuinely amazing. Watch the series and then purchase the film 'Serenity' which is going really cheap from most places. Fox usually make good decisions when they cancel shows, however, cancelling Firefly was a really stupid decision on their part.
  • and don't forget 5% back with Quidco........

And if you don't like westerns don't let that put you off. I hate them and LOVE Firefly. Dialog to die for. Probably my favourite show off all time, with more laugh out loud moments that most comedies, with the possible exception of My Name is Earl. :)
  • I've got this series and I'm afraid to watch the last few episodes because I know that's all there's going to be. Fox Network financed a legendary show here and then flushed it down the pan by not screening it in the right order and then cancelling it. The only slightly nerdy New Scientist "The World's Best Space Sci-Fi Ever" poll in 2005 saw this at number one and the movie version "Serenity" at number two. Go buy.

I thought I was the only person who'd done this! So, of course, I haven't yet viewed my copy of Serenity. It's driving my kids mad, because they can't discuss it and "spoil" it for me. :D

OMG that's bordering on child cruelty! ;) If you can see Serenity on the big screen (they have been doing some rescreenings round the country) it's worth it. Go on get those Firefly DVD's out! :) Actually I think I'll go get mine!
