Arabic calligraphy

I have been fascinated by the look of Arabic since I was a kid and decided I wanted to learn to write it. So I bought some books and a proper Arabic calligraphy set.
I get the whole right to left thing but do all the letters have to be written from the bottom to top ? It feels awkward.
Anyone learning Arabic here or who can write it to give me some pointers ? Thanks !!
Also, which are the best books for an English speaker ? Or I could learn French-English also.
