Mortgage Redemption Chaps Payment

I have requested a redemption statement from my mortgage lender as I have a very small amount outstanding, approx £750.
Whilst there are no charges applied, as I had a standard variable rate mortgage with no early redemption fees, the bank is telling me that their condition is that I have to make the payment using the 'chaps' system. For this service MY bank will relieve me of £20.
So, to recap, I want to pay Standard Life [now Barclays] £750, but I will have to swallow a charge of £20 to do so!
I cannot find any reference to this condition in paperwork associated with my taking out the mortgage. Has anyone out there found themselves in the same position I wonder?

Can you not go into Barclays with a cheque for £750 and your mortgage account details and pay the balance over the conter.
It may take 7 working days for the cheque to clear but you are not in a rush are you ?
