contractor hasn't paid since Christmas, advise, please!

Hubby works for a big construction company. Or so we thought. Every few months hubby would be paid by new company (most are LTD's) without prior knowledge. Just before Christmas they've changed the company that handles the payments and there has been only one payment since then that we can't understand what work is it for. No idea if tax has been deducted paid into HMRC. Every week since this one payment hubby has been lied to that he'll get paid next week and nothing so far. Most confusing thing is the big company called him for this job but now they say that actually the LTD that pays him is his "boss" (or point of communication for this problems)
So who is actually the contractor and who should hubby ask for his money? 10 years in the job never had any problems but now we face eviction as we emptied all credit cards to pay the rent for the house and if the lies continue we'll be on the streets next month plus a huge credit card debt.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
