pay down debt or use money to buy investment?

Just interested what the forums views are on this, say you have a 50k mortgage and used overpayments over the next 10 years to pay it off..by then surely most of the 50k mortgage would have been killed by inflation?
Then wouldn't it have been better to invest that surplus money instead of killing the debt off?
I am very close to starting overpayments but this has got me thinking?
What is the forums views on this?

Personal opinion is clear the debt rather then save.

Most savings accounts cannot provide the return you get on a savings account. Plus if you over pay you are paying less intrest.

I'm in a similar situation and if I overpay I'll be saving £5 over a 12 month period by overpaying.
