Birth announcement cards

I've got a little bit of time on my hands now my maternity leave has started but the baby has yet to arrive so I thought I might try and make some birth announcement cards. I obviously don't know the time of his arrival etc. so I want to do them in a way it will be easy for DH to add these details in himself later.

Ideally I'd prefer to make them myself but if anyone sees some great offers on shop made ones I'd consider them as well. I had a look at the ones on Snapfish but to be honest didn't really like the design.

I also thought that if I made them myself I could send them by e-mail to some people. I've got a reasonable printer with some spare 6x4" photo paper so can print them out for those who'd prefer to get them through the post.

Any suggestions from any MSEr who has tried this themselves?

Best wishes

Not much help to you right now, but we waited until Spud arrived & used his foot to make a blue footprint in paint which we then scanned & turned itno our announment cards, a sheet of A4 folded into 4 with the footprint & his birth details on the front & a photo printed inside. Everyone kept asking us if we had enlarged his foot : No! It was actual size! There was only room for one footprint, not the pair, on a 1/4 A4 size card! Even if I do say so myself, it was unique & everyone loved it.

Looking back I have no idea how on earth we found the time, energy or patience to do this when he was only 10 days old, but we did:D and of course, the health visitor turned up before we had finished scrubbing the blue paint off of him.....

    Good luck;)

  • we did something like this... but ours was provided by bt

i phoned up (while i was in early labour actually! but you might be more organised than i was lol) and gave them all the information, who to send too, addresses etc... and then after my daughter was born i rang again and they sent them out,
everyone commented on how different and lovely it was to recieve a telegram and they arrived quickly.

it was on a half price offer when i called.... not sure how much it is now
but if your thinking of doing something fancy on the pc, after all the ink and paper, envelopes, photos, stamps (and time) it might still work out cheaper.

    Hi Money_Maker_Shaker,

As your thread has dropped down on the Old Style board I have moved it over to the Special Occasions and Celebrations board to see if you can get some more replies there.

  • When my son was born 8 and a bit years ago, things were all a bit more lo-tech!!!

I bought a stamp with a cartoon style baby on it wearing a nappy and the word "TaaaaDah" - I wrote out the words that my daughters were proud to announce the birth of ... and left a space - with a space for date, time and weight (glad I hand wrote them as people would have thought 10lb 7oz was a spelling mistake otherwise!!!!! ... ouch!).

My hospital bag contained the batch of postcards, already stamped and addressed, stamper, pink and blue stamp pads and pink and blue colouring pencils .. and while I was stuck in hopsital following his arrival (I was in for 8 days with each of mine!) I stamped the cards with the blue stamp and coloured in the baby's nappy with the blue pencil - very triumphantly I seem to remember having had 2 girls before that!!!!!

Even in the days of e-mail I still prefer to get 'real' post through the letterbox and I know my family and friends were thrilled to get their handmade cards.

    :D

    Good luck !
  • you think telegrams are high tech?
and they are "real" letterbox post. i think you may have them confused with something else...

personally i love the hand made stuff, we make cards for almost every occasion but i knew i wouldnt get round to birth announcements, my maternity leave went in a flash and after the baby was born.....no chance!! :D
  • Some really helpful replies. I do like the idea of having something to post as I know I love getting letters and I could do all the address labels etc. in advance.

I've had a search round on the web for some templates but not found anything I like as yet.

The telegraph was a great idea but looked really expensive when I had a nosey at the site.

he he - I know my kids think I'm from the dark ages but ....

I mean't hi-tech as in the OP e-mailing her announcement to some of her friends/relatives and Lillibet who scanned in her baby's footprint.

Slinking off to finish my shopping list .... now where did I put my slate and chalk!!!!!!!!!!!

When our LO was born we scanned some of his first pictures, in the delivery room, being dressed for the first time etc. and copied them onto an A5 card, and then we added his birth details. LO was born at 7am and the cards were in the post by midday. It also gave my husband something to do to get him out the way after the shock of being a father. We also put a little note in asking people to phone or text before coming to visit. This certainly helped in the early days as we could stagger the number of people that came round.

    Best of luck
