I'd give anything for the chance to save rainwater.
With most semi's, the downpipe from both houses on the front goes down one house and at the back, the other house takes the downpipe. On the back of our semi's, my neighbour takes the rainwater (and his goes straight down the drain). We've recently had new guttering and a downpipe to our side installed BUT, the damned people brought the pipe down and into the "cup" which takes the bathroom waste tap water, so my water is still wasted.
I was wondering if one of those "diverters" could be introduced higher up, I wouldn't have thought it was any problem. I could then have a longer pipe to a barrel. What do you think ?. Please don't suggest I could do it, cause I couldn't, age, infirmaty etc.

If the diverter is higher than the top of the barrel/water butt then it will overflow. You'd need the downpipe to come much lower rather than joining with other wastewater so that you can have a diverter attached at the right height. Did whoever did the work know that you were wanting to use a water butt? If so, they shouldn't have done it how they did.0

so long as it's only waste tap water and not sewage then it should be okay anyway; could depend a bit on what sort of soap etc that you use but I wouldn't have thought that it was a problem.0
