Maternity cover promotion - no pay rise

they are extracting the.......
You can use any title on the CV if you do the job, if need be "acting ........" will cover a difference from a reference.
Remember job titles are a very lose guide to what job you do an vary a lot between companies.
It's all about experience.
Does this job improve the networking potential to be seen to be good by others outside the company?0 -

Obviously I don't know what her experience is, but she is probably looking at it from a similar viewpoint from me in that doing it will be something great to add to her CV.
If there's one lesson I’ve learnt through all this, it's that there is no group of people who have more rights when it comes to the workplace, than pregnant ladies! I really do understand your concerns, but you do have the right to return to the job you left under exactly the same conditions – something that has probably been communicated properly to the girl covering your leave, unlike me!
Congratulations by the way
Hi Lucy, thank you! Well I've been training her for 10 weeks, and she is picking things up well, and surprises me with some of the things she remembers sometimes. She is young though, and sometimes her tone on the phone is not quite as professional as it should be, but thats something we will work on! I know she intends to ask for more money and think she should definitely be entitled to it (at least to the two bonuses that I get each month which are performance related. She would be covering my role, so surely should get at least those. They would equate to another £500 ish a month for her which I think is fair and I hope she gets it, not only for her, but selfishly because I dont want them to have a girl doing the role who is paid so much less than me!)
I've just started another thread though. My boss is so fickle and has changed her mind about my training her up today (after 10 weeks of training!!) so not sure how things will work out! Think I'm going to have to argue this one out!0 -
My organisation often work on this notion of proving yourself in a role before a payrise/job title change will be considered. The concern will be if they increase your salary now, or change your job title, then they don't have anything of a similar nature when the colleague returns from maternity. Furthermore if they promote you now and you don't prove to be a success they are carrying extra departmental spend without any increased productivity. Obviously this is the organisational thought process, and isn't much help to you however
My personal thoughts would be to take the role, and make it clear you are excited about it as a development opportunity. Use the increased status to network in the organisation and tell people your own aspirations, with a view to another promotion in 9 months. Show people how good you are in the job and really carve a name for yourself. When it comes to pay review don't focus on why you should have the going rate for that job, but exactly how you have achieved your objectives and the bottom line value you have bought to the organisation as your case for a rise.
I would take the role, throw yourself into it and try and get experience in some key areas that really enhance your CV. Have a positive attitude throughout and make them realise that you have real capability and potential - the 9 months you do the job should be ample time to find you an alternative senior role, or at least to have build experience you can take into another role.
Worst case scenario is you don't get promoted after 9 months and have no payrise in that time. You would have had extra sress, but a better CV from it, and were prepared to do that role for extra money as well.
Good luck anyway0 -
I am pretty sure if someone was underperforming they would have capability procedures brought against them, resulting in reverting to previous role and conditions or being dismissed.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

I'd learn what I could and get all the best and varied experience I could while looking for a job in a company that will treat it's employees more fairly.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0

OP, I was just pondering how much of a stink you could make before it is less effort for them to give you the payrise, before you cause too much upset. I know you've been to the board, but would it be beyond it if you asked for time off for an 'interview' as if the company feels you have the skills and are capable of doing the secondment then why not get paid the corresponding salary. As others have said, they will be making a massive saving if they are not recruiting to cover the role shuffle as most if not all of the mat pay will be covered by HMRC, so they certainly do have the funds to pay you more.
Alternatively you could genuinely look for another job come October as you will have had some experience of doing the new role and your position would be stronger, or fake an interview and scare them a little.
If they value you as much as they say they do (although I do wonder whether you are more valuable because of your low salary...) then hopefully it will be too much hassle to lose you as they would be replacing you at a higher salary anyway.0
