Awkward Pension Company

I have been granted full Tier 1 ill health retirement by a major university which uses the LGPS. (This means I will not work again to the age of 65) .This involved details from my GP, various consultants and an independent specialist OH physician.

I have a small pension (c 3k pa) with a company I worked for in the past who have had the same information and REFUSED my claim!???

I have started the appeal process and won't name and shame at present, but what more can I do to meet their terms and conditions which are the same as my main pension providers????

What process do I undertake if they simply refuse my ill health pension, even though they have all the required evidence?

TIA

Vigman

£3k pa is a fairly valuable pension and is worth getting advice on. Is it final salary or money purchase?

Assuming you get nowhere with your appeal it could be worthwhile transfering the £3k pension's current value elsewhere if elsewhere can provide a good enhanced annuity.

So I suggest you obtain the current transfer value and consult an IFA who will be able to search the whole of the market for you.

It was a final salary scheme run by a national charity.

I suppose my main point was they can't refuse to pay it legally as I meet all their requirements which have been fully evidenced by all concerned, but what would be the next stage of appeal if they did?

I just left it maturing with them and never thought of transferring the funds......you make me wonder whether I could have brought it into my current LGPS final salary scheme now!?

Also if it is still transferable, who would want the liability of paying it from age 58 to 65 as if I had left at 65?

    Thanks

Just seen this...."You have only 12 months from joining the LGPS to opt to transfer your previous pension rights"....... that was 15 years ago!

Just to clarify 2,885 GBP pa is the estimate if I were to retire at 65 in 2018 (but would have to be paid from now for meeting the ill health requirements, as is happening soon with my LGPS pension).

An alternative provider would not be bound by the previous guaranteed payments. They would calculate a new pension payment based on the age at which the pension starts and factors such as your health. For a healthy person moving the pension could well be a bad idea, but in your case the loss of pension from moving out of a final salary scheme could possibly be more than compensated for by the enhancement arising from your ill health.

Could anyone please confirm the section:
