PC wont power up - 'Keyboard error/Not Connected' message!

Every time we turn our PC on, it beeps - then we get a message on the monitor saying...

"Keyboard Error or Keyboard not connected"

We've tried 4-5 different keyboards and 3-4 differnt Mice - to no avail.

Desperate to access the PC as it has a few important documents on there.

Any advice to a tecnical novice on what could be wrong?

All advice will be 'Thanked'

Are you using a USB or PS2 keyboard?

If it's PS2, are they colour coded? I've an old pc that's not coded and has no symbols - it gets stroppy if I put the mouse and kb the wrong way round.

Sounds like you may have a broken PS2 port. Any chance you could get hold of a USB one and try that?

When did the PC's mouse and keybrd last work ?

Do the Keybrd lights flash at all ? have you a USB Keybrd to try ?

Can you get into the BIOS .. look at startup screen for the key(s) to press DEL/F2/Ctlrl+S etc

Then see if the ps2 ports are turned off.

    Thanks.

Not used the PC for a good 2 months.

Dont recall keyboard lights coming on.

    Dont have a USB keyboard.

Cannot get into BIOS as it wont recognise the keyboard.

Are you swapping the keyboards over with the pc turned off and off from the wall socket ? ( This can blow the ports if swapping while turned on )

Sounds like you are not at the pc. With the correct colour coding matching watch the num lock, scroll lock and cap lock lights. If they do not flash as you turn the PC, on from the PC on/off switch it could be a dead ps2 port, so you will need to get USB keybrd ...

Thats what it was. Both the mouse/keyboard ports are out.

Found a PS2 to USB adapter which picked up the keyboard signal - then I swapped it with the mouse so I could navigate my way round and take the files I needed.

    Thanks all:beer:
