  • I forgot to mention that some of my mates have found places on spareroom.co.uk
  • A small diesel car would also be an option worth thinking about - both ours are diesels - a 1.4l Citroen C3 and a 1.5l Clio. We get the £30 road tax on both, and between 55-65mpg too. Servicing costs come out very slightly higher than petrol, and they are also very slightly harder on tyres (fronts in particular) due to the heavier engine, but the reliability and miles per gallon easily cancel that out.

Also look at where you are getting your car serviced- the price for an annual service and MOT looks like what main dealers charge. If you can ask around to find a reliable independent garage you could look to half that, and probably many of your other car repair bills.

  • Does your council tax include single occupant discount? I save a couple of hundred pounds with that.

There is a belief that once a car starts cosing you money, it wont stop and in the long run will be cheaper to buy a new one. Is there a way you could buy a cheap car on (interest free) finance - a lot of places do special deals such as a years free insurance. When you do find car insurance etc. make sure you go through a cashback site - the money soon adds up.
