Back to yr RAM question. PC4300 was only made in small quantities and is not readily available any more.

I would go with Crucial's advice (they guarantee the compatibility) and install one 1gb PC5300 stick, and remove both PC4300 sticks, rather than go down to PC4200.

Unless you are doing intensive CAD or photoshop applications anything above 1gb on XP is a waste.

I suggest removing both old sticks as the system runs at the lowest common denominator, hence leaving one of the pc4300 sticks in means you wouldn't get the benefit of the faster pc5300 (not that one can really tell!).

PS both Crucial and Offtek are good specialist suppliers of RAM, both been around for years

Why would you suggest to the OP that he should purchase a more expensive 1GB module instead of 512MB(which would take him to 1GB anyway)?
Especially when you suggest that he won't be able to tell the difference between the clock speeds.
Not only that, but you would be taking him from a dual channel configuration to a single channel.

Your 'recommendations' of Crucial are becoming ridiculous.

    Hi,
I think the problem may not be helped by memory - I ran Crucial's scanning software and it says I have only 512MB of memory (2 x 256MB). The memory type is "DDR-PC2-5300"

Takethis Your comments are becomming quite personal - posters write opinions on here - if you don't like my opinions ignore them - just don't make silly comments. You obviously don't like Crucuial, just leave it at that.

The OP has said above that he has 2 x 256mb, if you care to read back....So if he buys a 512mb stick he only goes to 768mb which would be a waste; the cost difference between 512mb and 1gb does justify the going for the smaller of the two, okay?`

If you had bothered to do your research instead of harping on about Crucial, you would have noted the the machine has four slots. (The reason why I asked the OP which variation he possessed).

I'm concerned about people coming here for advice and being told by you time and again, that they should depend on a commercially oriented piece of software(Crucial Tool), rather than someone who actually bothers to take the time to give the right advice. Perhaps you don't think that is 'personal' each time that you write it.

If you can't be bothered to check before posting, be thankful that there is someone here to correct your mistakes.
I'm sure that, as usual, once you have realised your mistake you will simply stop posting on the thread rather than admit it for the OP's sake..
