credit after bankruptcy

Hi all please help. The background to my plight is this, bankrupt June 2003, discharged April 2005, Not had any credit apart from a mobile phone contract since, credit score on Experian 810(I know this doesnt really count for anything). I tried to apply for a credit card but got refused, no reason given despite me asking. also my girlfriend who has never had bad credit was refused. I noticed on my credit file that the address down as my current address is correct, however it only shows me living here for 4 years when I have been here for 5 years. My question is If when I fill in an application form and its ask how long have i lived here, if I put down 5 years and this doesnt match my credit file, would this mean I am turned down for credit? If so how can I repair my credit file to state the correct date?
Thanks

the time being out a few months shouldn't make much difference, there is a sticky at the top of the page on cleaning your credit file, thats a good place to start.

But even with a totally clear file you still can be turned down as you say your score means next to nothing,it can be as simple as not being on the voting registar or even not having enough credit on your file, they like to see past credit was paid on time, there are many others things it could be,not just a matter of your credit, have a read up on it on here and follow the tips and try again but keep in mind ever an application for credit will show on your file even if it is only a search of your record and that can go against you too so don't try too many at once or the same place within a short period as many will auto turn you down if you apply more than once within a short period (around 6 months)
  • Thanks for that, I have had no credit since bankruptcy so maybe this is what caused the refusal, jsut seems strange for my finace to have been refused too. I guess it could be best for me too get a SP card for the time being and build up my credit rating. The main question still remains for me, the electoral register is a year out, so should I put the actual time at my address or time ishonw as being on the electoral register, or can i send a letter with a copy of my council tax showing I was living at this adress 5+ years ago?

most like to see you at an address for 3 years or more so shouldn't matter but yes you can do that and ask them to correct it but they can if they choose only add a comment to show the correction and leave the date as is,so may just add to making your report look messy, they could be working from when you went on the voting registar so they could be correct,if me I would from now on use their time which would make things alot easier.

remeber too that if you share any links with your GF such as loans accounts mortgage etc etc then both your credit reports will be linked too so her good report could be as good or bad as yours.

Your bankruptcy is not playing a part here because it will have disappeared from your credit history in 2009. Your Experian Credit Score is about average and many lenders are looking for customers with better credit histories than that. If you have a thin credit report that could certainly be an issue and that's something you can work on.
