Any good rules of thumb for how much should be saved by 30?

  • It sounds like you have quite a lot of disposable income, and locking all of it away in a pension until retirement is a bit one-track. The obvious advantage of pension saving is the tax relief and employer contribution, but you will inevitably need more liquid funds at some time in your life.

However vague you think it might be, it would still be useful to do some projections; these things are never cast in stone, they can be changed whenever and as often as you want. But at least it will give you some handle on alternatives available to you. Better you do it now than wait to your 40's then find yourself playing catch-up.
A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove you don't need it.
