Mortgage transfer advice

I would like to do some home improvements. My house is valued at £130K with £19K outstanding. My mortgage has been with the Abbey since 1986 and finishes in 2010 and my monthly repayments are £330. I have been self-employed for 22 years not making a fortune but just ticking over with no bad credit history. Quite honestly changing lenders makes me nervous and I start off trying to sort it all out but get lost in all the jargan and just think "better the devil you know" and nothing gets done? So can someone advise me where I start to find a more competitive deal and how do I go about it as straightforward as possible.

You have not stated how much you wish to raise for home improvements?

Remortgaging is one of the easiest things to do - its all very straightforward - just ensure you employ the services of an independent mortgage broker and they will guide you through the process all the way.

If Abbey are not offerring you a decent deal, then the easiest thing to do is find a lender that will offer a good rate and pay all/most of the fees for you, As to who is offering the best deal will depend on what you are looking for, what your affordability is like, and what your current circumstances are like.
