You pays your money and you takes your choice-- I would imagine most owners of either machine would be well satisfied with a decent laptop at a good price from a trusted vendor.

You made yours, which all round was probably the best choice so now enjoy it.
    Happy surfing.
  • Hmmmm ... I'm going to have to think about that one.

"JL warranty is good, however, £350 for this at PCWorld"

I don't think so! There are several versions of this model about but most are at lower specs, especially the processor. Assuming this is the PC World Version you are talking about ...

it has an AMD 450E processor and only 320GB hard drive plus only 12 month warranty and invitation to buy 3 years for £165 - worse than the JL offer on each account.

I think the J Lewis offer is significantly better, but the PC World/Curry's version (which I did check before posting) may be fine for some who only need low spec.

    Unsure,

I'm sorry about that. I should have done some more detailed research. Hadn't realised the PCW one was a lower spec. I'm glad you pointed that out. Looks like a trip down to JL could be on the cards for tomorrow.

JL only price match like for like, ie if BOTH have 2 yr gtee, or if its a telly, 5 yr gtee.

    Hi Vikj,
I think that's debatable. The model you've lined to has 2gb more ram but a smaller hard disk. It requires a cashback deal to get the lower price for which you need to trade in an old Toshiba and the deal ends in a few days... and it doesn't offer the JL two year guarantee. It's a good spec at a good price but I'd happily pay the extra £50 for the extra storage and knowing I can take it back to a reputable bricks and mortar merchant who is unlikely to disappear if problems occur...and I don't have an old Tosh to trade!

I wasn't trying to suggest it was the only deal in town...just a very good one from a highly reputable company. John Lewis have in the past replaced a fridge freezer and a whole wooden floor for me in the past and I'd trust them to deal well if problems should arise with the laptop in the next 24 months. I don't know if Saveonlaptops.com are equally reliable.

Anyway, my son has the machine up and running very easily and it looks good so far. Hopefully MSErs will be equally happy with whichever flavour suits their needs and pockets.

Actually, its a straightforward £100 cashback deal after 1 month, no need for a trade in. Personally, 500GB should last a long time and I'd personally prefer the extra RAM.

As you say, each to their own.

My mistake, got confused with another offer I was directed to on the Toshiba site. Apologies.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

INCORRECT. John lewis will price match if the PRODUCT is identical. I have had them price match numerous items. The only "restriction" is that the place they are proce matching with has a high street presence, even if the price is lower online.

Remember the extra years on the guarantees are advertised by JL as FREE and therefore they would be "breaking the law" to them say that this is not a valid reason for refusing the match.

From JL website "As long as Guarantee terms are comparable."

Must admit I have never noticed that before. JL have always agreed a price match when I have used it. The reason for doing this is the extra warranty.

Like I said though, JL would have to be very careful of refusing a price match on the grounds of warranty is they are saying they are giving a FREE xyr warranty. As soon as they claim this justifies the higher price they are charging, they have by implication "charged" for the extra warranty.
