My son's laptop just died and needed a replacement in a hurry. Checked the usual suspects and have just purchased a Toshiba C660 2EV from John Lewis. At £449 with a two year JL guarantee it had better specs at lower price than any other options I could find...plus peace of mind from dealing with a reputable merchant.

Main details:
Core i5 Intel processor
6GB RAM
640 GB HDD
15.6 LED backlit screen
Windows 7 Home Premium
webcam
face recognition (bit of a gimmick I reckon)
wifi b/g/n
5 hours battery life
good sized keyboard and keys!
only downside I can see is limited USB (x2) and no HDMI ouptut (has vga) but since son will be using it for school work etc that's not an issue for us.
The machine was on special offer and was going fast according to sales staff. Hope that's useful to someone else too.

JL warranty is good, however, £350 for this at PCWorld0

So tell John Lewis its £350 at PC World and they will price match and you still get the two year warranty....although I would question whether its the same model. The OP mentions an i5 processor whereas the PC World machines are showing as AMDs0 -

I don't think so! There are several versions of this model about but most are at lower specs, especially the processor. Assuming this is the PC World Version you are talking about ...

it has an AMD 450E processor and only 320GB hard drive plus only 12 month warranty and invitation to buy 3 years for £165 - worse than the JL offer on each account.
I think the J Lewis offer is significantly better, but the PC World/Curry's version (which I did check before posting) may be fine for some who only need low spec.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
This beats both in my opinion......

Hi Vikj,
I think that's debatable. The model you've lined to has 2gb more ram but a smaller hard disk. It requires a cashback deal to get the lower price for which you need to trade in an old Toshiba and the deal ends in a few days... and it doesn't offer the JL two year guarantee. It's a good spec at a good price but I'd happily pay the extra £50 for the extra storage and knowing I can take it back to a reputable bricks and mortar merchant who is unlikely to disappear if problems occur...and I don't have an old Tosh to trade!
I wasn't trying to suggest it was the only deal in town...just a very good one from a highly reputable company. John Lewis have in the past replaced a fridge freezer and a whole wooden floor for me in the past and I'd trust them to deal well if problems should arise with the laptop in the next 24 months. I don't know if Saveonlaptops.com are equally reliable.
Anyway, my son has the machine up and running very easily and it looks good so far. Hopefully MSErs will be equally happy with whichever flavour suits their needs and pockets.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
was the old laptop a hp as there is a problem with them going faulty and people getting part refunds due to a spec fault0

I think you got a good deal and one that was flagged up on hotukdeals about a week ago.
You also hit the nail on the head if it goes wrong.
These internet only merchants promise the world until things do go wrong then it`s all if`s and but`s.0 -
Hi 2010,
No it was an old Acer Travelmate...about 7 years old so not too surprising that the screen finally died! Thanks for the thought though.
Add; I've also realised that the Toshiba trade in up to £100 ( not really cashback) is also available to anyone with an old Tosh on the J Lewis deal.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
I bought a Sony laptop few days ago from JL for £450 product code 82713520. Super machine and very well made. The chap instore said that avoid toshs due to the number of returns they get. His main reason was build quality.
Stay with JL due to good 2year warranty.
Re JL price match, whilst very fair, its hard to get an exact match in order to be successful.0 -
Hi Moneycheck,
good price for a Sony but obviously has lower spec cpu (i3) and smaller hard disk than the Tosh c660 (320gb Vs 640GB)
Actually, in the 2011 PC World laptop reliability survey Toshiba comes out ahead of Sony. Toshiba third (after Asus and Apple), Sony fifth.

I think reputations (both good and bad) often lag a little on current performance.
You pays your money and you takes your choice-- I would imagine most owners of either machine would be well satisfied with a decent laptop at a good price from a trusted vendor.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0
