Hearing done in Magistrates Court

Options
Hi all,

Well I've started the ball rolling for bankruptcy, and I'm quite concerned over how my district does it. I have to file the papers at a local town county court, but the actual hearing takes place at my local magistrates
Does this mean the hearing would be open to the Public ??
There is a light at the end of the tunnel.....I just need to find the switch.

As far as I’m aware, no BR hearings will be done in public, and numerous sources online will state this, however I’m a County Councillor, not an expert.

I thought cases were only open for criminal offences?

Have pinged email to another Cllr (Former Magistrate) to get confirmation for you.

Thanks for that. Having to go to a Magistrates Court for the hearing makes me even more nervous. :(

  • There are many combined court centres - different courts in the same building.

Where you are being told to go may be called magistrates' court by some, but the part of the building you will be using is the county court.

Less likely, the judge may be sitting as a magistrate, but will do a few county court cases with his county court judge hat on first.

The hearing is deemed to be 'in chambers' - private - but the decision is public, although not usually publicised locally as it used to be.
