Working abroadish

I currently live and work in NI and in a few months will start a new job in the South of Ireland. As I will be paid in euros I rang my bank (leading UK high street bank) for advice. They informed that when I get paid, they convert the money from euros to GBP, whilst giving me a rubbish exchange rate as well as charging me for the pleasure each month! Any advice on how to make my money go further?

Could you open an account with an RoI bank to handle your salary & day to day expenses whilst south of the border & then exchange money as required.

Some people on here have said good things about XE.com for electronic currency exchanges - havn't used them myself though
  • I know that Nationwide are good about withdrawing money in other currencies eg Euro - they don't make a transaction charge. not sure if they're the same about credits but might be worth checking out?

But I'd be inclined to have main bank in ROI and do as much of my spending there as possible. It's an interesting question though, whether you could move your mortgage etc to ROI bank and pay in euros even if the property was in the North.

Congrats on the new job BTW :T

EDIT - when I think about it, a Citizens Advice Bureau somewhere like Derry or Newry might well be able to advise you on the best way to go about this.
  • I think the best advice is to open a bank account in the ROI and transfer money as few times as possible/ and when the interest rate is "best", to my UK bank. Cheers for the advice
