advice on debt repayment

i'm posting this for a friend who's wife as just died, and he is now opening her letters and finding to his horror that she had a lot of debt,so far it's credit card and store cards. The amount so far is close to £15000.He had no idea about this,he's on a low income and with the funeral costs now as little savings. Is he liable to pay these debts? He owns the house, his wife was not on the deeds.

Comments

  • No, he's not liable. If the debt was only in her name, then they can only be settled from any assets/estate she leaves. He won't be chased for anything outside of that.

Best to give the details to the Executor of the estate to deal with appropriately.
