Is it common? I got my RSA 1 & 2 in typing some years ago and have never really came across a job that required them apart from admin but any office i've been in its always been women doing these roles.

why wouldn't a man work in admin? No reason to think you can't do it. Men work in accounts! Is it common? I got my RSA 1 & 2 in typing some years ago and have never really came across a job that required them apart from admin but any office i've been in its always been women doing these roles.0 -
I've worked with plenty of men in admin roles - I agree there are fewer of them than women though.
I think typing is less important in admin roles nowadays - I don't think I've ever been asked about it in a job interview, and only occasionally when registering for an agency. I type fairly quickly with two fingers and I've never needed anything more than that.Debt at LBM (17/10/08) £5727.61 Debt free date 31/08/090 -
I think that's a strange question. I work across a number of industries in both public and private sector and see an even split in males/females in admin roles.
20 years ago, a male PA would have been an exception, now it's absolutely unremarkable.
i don't think there is much call for straight typing or even traditional secretarial skills now. IT literacy seems to be much more important.0 -

I would imagine the person who would get an admin job would have recent experience of working in an office and conversant in all aspects of IT are you that?:footie:0 -

Never worked in an office, hardly worth applying, normally I wouldnt give a job like that a second thought but times are tough0 -
It's also very unattractive - I can't imagine fancying a male secretary because I still see the role as being intrinsically "female".20 years ago, a male PA would have been an exception, now it's absolutely unremarkableValue-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

its not worth applying unless you have up to date office skills and IT skills. There will be lots of people going for the jobs who have these skills?:footie:0

I’ve got my 78yr old grandfather on front desk as we speak. I don’t think it makes any difference, and neither does he. He’s earning the same as Emma, so I don’t see how there’s a problem!

Falko, I'm not sure you even know what an 'admin job' means these days then if you've never worked in an office and you think it's only women and that a couple of ancient typing qualifications are what's needed. I don't mean that nastily but lots of men work in admin, but I suspect that my idea of what type of job that is, differs from yours. Either way, you won't have much hope, you need up to date skills and training, especially if you have no experience.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
my last job was partially "admin" - but i hasten to add that if it came to typing and stuff, i could probably do the job well enough despite basically not typing "correctly", i'm still more than able for that side of things!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0
