My road tax is due end of this month. Have already got the new one. I usually display it on the night the old one expires.

Was wondering what happens if i was to display the new one now?
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

I was advised by the clerk at the post office that it was 14 days before expiry, but I dont know if that is correct or not.

technically you can display it any time you want as long as the old one is still in place, the new disc isnt valid until the start of next month so you can be done for not displaying a valid disc.

That used to be the case, but you can now buy one from the 5th of the month the old one expires.

as soon as you get it you can put it on the windscreen, no problems doing it before the old one expires

    Conflicting answers. Who's actually right?

Proof by vigorous assertion doesn't count.

"A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200. The tax disc can not be transferred between vehicles."

So you should swop at midnight at the end of the month technically.

I've always put it up with the old one (unless thats out of date - IE it arrived late in the post) then I rip out the old one when the next new one comes along. Not uncommon for people to display an old and new at the same time - I've seen it a lot in the world of parking.

But in this day and age i really should not be an issue, they know whether it is taxed or not. If someone picks you up on it they are just being a jobsworth or they work for a private parking company and are trying to scam you.
