Husband with higher allowance?

Anyone know why my husband gets a higher tax allowance than me?

I'm 27, a full-time student, and HMRC has given me a 742L code which seems right to me - I have never underpaid my taxes, and usually I get some rebate back at the end of the tax year because I have my tax code for my main job and BR for all my other ones so I generally overpay.

My husband is 30, and he's just been told his tax code is 802L. He doesn't have a job at the moment, and can't claim any benefits/allowances because he's American.

Anyone know why he gets more than me? Seems kinda unfair to split it that way, since I'm the one working three jobs (and doing uni) whilst he's still unemployed!!!

  • Sounds like he has a new tax code for next tax year starting April. You should have that too it is going up to over £8K for everyone.

  • Fantastic! Thanks for clearing that up. HMRC keep trying to !!!!!! around with tax codes for me for 2011-2012 since I have one job that gives me the same amount of income each month (which I make my budget from and thus has all my tax allowance) and various ad hoc temp jobs. They wrote and told me that they were giving over £5k in allowance to the job that I'm lucky if I'll earn £100 a month on. Silly HMRC!

Good to know it's going up though - I sure need it right now!
