Driver's Wing Mirror Problem

Hey everyone. Me with the Golf GTI again. *sigh* You might remember that we have had quite a few problems with it.

We have another problem.

The driver's wing-mirror is a bit...I don't know how to explain it. Instead of it being pointing up and to the road, it points down and to the kerb? DH has to keep putting his hand out when driving to fix it, only for it to be the same 10 minutes later.

We're not sure if it's an electrical problem or not because when DH presses the button (or whatever it is. I'm rubbish with cars), the wing-mirror doesn't move.
When we got the car, the mirror glass was very rusty so we bought another mirror glass and stuck it over but I don't think it's that. I think it's a problem with the bit that the mirror sits in, iyknim? DH has tried sellotaping it in the position he wants but that hasn't worked either.
Obviously it's dangerous having a mirror that isn't working properly but we're not sure if it's an electrical problem or a problem with the bit the mirror is in?

If it is an electrical problem, can a normal mechanic fix it? Or do we have to get an electrician?

I don't know anything about cars at all, to be honest.:o

Thank you in advance.

  • Can't you wedge something between the edge of the mirror and the mirror housing to hold it in place??

Pull the glass out (with the plastic holder still attached) and you should be able to see what's going on.

There will be a piece of glass/mirror mounted on a plastic backing with a heater matrix (maybe) behind it, I reckon all that's happened is a plastic clip has come loose and it no longer holds the top part of that back plate to the motor/mechanism.

The mirror sits on a plinth (this enables it to move) and the plinth is attached to the car.

It sounds as though the plastic catches on the plinth have become worn and are no longer holding the mirror. Because it is not being held firmly it is sagging.

Temporary fix is to use gaffer tape to hold it in position. Why not look in a scrapyard and get a full mirror unit and just replace.

Has sticking a new piece of glass over the old one added too much weight to the unit, therefore pulling the mirror down whilst in motion?
Did the motorised mirror work before you added the new glass?

You could be lucky and the mirror part just needs a gentle push back on to the moving electric platform.
