Studying to be an IFA (early days)- advice please

Hi,
I currently work full time in a bank and i'm looking into studying to be an IFA. I've done the research which suggests the CII Diploma is probably the best route to go down in the long term, but I want to walk before I can run.
The CII does an entry level Award in Financial Planning which is worth 12 credits. Has anyone done it? Is it worth doing as a prequel to the diploma? It's aimed at people working in a non-regulated environment (which I am at the moment) and does seem relevant to my current role.
Also, if there are any IFA's reading this, how difficult is the job to get into at the minute? And (if you don't mind me asking) what are the financial possibilities in terms of wages/commission/bonus. I know it's an area I want to work in and I suspect the financial rewards are decent but I have no real idea.
I'd be very grateful as a novice in this area for any advice/words of wisdom.

You may be better off going across to the Insurance forum as there are a few regular IFAs on that section who may be willing to help.
From my limited understanding a significant percentage of IFAs are self employed and so things like "wage" is much more about what client list you can generate0
