Nationwide Customers - Laptop

Nationwide Laptop Fine.

Some more bad news for Nationwide customers.

In a letter to ALL customers from Philip Williamson - Chief Executive

Mr Williamson assured us that, he could also confirm that all Nationwide customers are covered by the Society's customer promise that "If you are the innocent victim of fraud, you will not lose out".

Unfortunately I beleive this assurance is only applicable to Nationwide products. Therefore if you're a Nationwide account holder and suffered fraud or ID Theft on a non-Nationwide product, you've had it.

"Its the way they tell them" - clear as mud.

Any thoughts? discuss.

That is a very good point James.

I reckon the Directors should pay up or resign, they are ultimately responsible.

If a Nationwide customer did lose out I'm sure a bit of press influence i.e. getting a broadsheet consumer rights expert to take up the case, would ensure the customer were fully compensated.

If media reports are too be believed the laptop only contained information about Nationwide products so the fraudster would have to do more work to find out the person's other financial accounts i.e. so while they may know the person had a Nationwide Savings account they wouldn't know that the person has a ABC bank current account. As you can open a saving account with one lot of current account information then change your current account without informing them.

Going round to that's person's house would be harder work then going into the dustbin of a branch of lots of banks/building societies, if financial institutions continue to dispose of their waste as WatchDog has shown i.e. full account details, mother's maiden name, DOB, address, some bank statements.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • Nationwide have been great the 2 times that I have had money disappear from my account and have refunded it immediately and done a proper investigation - I do believe in these circs they would honour the promise.

Bad news about the £1m though :(

I did check and Philip Williamsons promise is only applicable to their (Nationwide's) products.

Hypothetically speaking if you hold or held a Nationwide account prior to the breach and are unfortunate enough to suffer from ID theft, or fraud on a non Nationwide product then it looks as if you're on your own.

Unless there were a spate of victims (all of whom where Nationwide customers at sometime), then this will never come to light.

Nationwide being mutual, the fine (small as it maybe) hits the people it's meant to protect.

I still think Nationwide should come clean to it's loyal customers and say exactly what marketing and personal material was held on this computer. Forewarned is forearmed.
  • What irritated me got letter telling me what had happened.

THEN in the letter it tells me how to take care of my pin number etc.
If they had been more careful would have had no problem anyway.

    Question
I have a mortgage and loan with Nationwide but dont bank with them
    Both on direct debit.

Now did the laptop contain information about this and would Nationwide be responsible if anything was taken from my account with other bank?
Remember only people who say money doesn't matter have already got enough

The so-called punishment fine of £800,000 doled out on the Nationwide, as someone has already pointed out, will actually be paid by the "victims", ie: Nationwide's customers, who are also the owners.

However, this "punishment" opens up all sorts of exciting possibilities where the victim pays the fine: travel on the Tube without a ticket and "Red Ken" pays you ! If you want to go by car, Ken will pay you to enter the Congestion Zone.

And best of all, Michael O'Leary pays you to travel on Ryanair !!!!!! (mind you, it would need to be a fair bit)
