You can make your own cake stands .. http://bridalinsider.com/2012/02/get-crafty-diy-cake-stand/

http://www.oncewed.com/7598/diy/diy-wedding-cupcake-stand/. Also do a google search for DIY cake stands

I made a 3 tier one for cupcakes at our draughts wedding. I bought 3 polystyrene cylinders, think I bought them in 6",8",10" then I bought 4 cake boards. I covered the cylinders with ribbon and decorated the boards but not necessary. I bought a wooden dowel from B&Q and my husband drilled through the centre of each board and cylinder. He cut the dowel to the right length and placed all layers in order, starting with the biggest board. We have a glue gun so with each layer I used a little hot glue to secure them. It was finished with the smallest board.

  • Hi there
I bought my 3 tier from Ebay, but they only hold around 16 cupcakes for a 3 tier. Are you wanting lots of cakestands or one big one?
You can get cardboard ones from places like the Range, and some supermarkets for around £5, but how sturdy they are I am not sure. I bought an acrylic one so I could use it for years to come for every birthday etc.

Another option could be to look around charity shops for vintage cake stands, which if you have a vintage tea party style it would fit in well.

If you were to buy an acrylic one I would go for one like this (I bought my 3 tier from them and love it!)

The good thing being you can build it to whatever size you like - so a 3,4,5 or 6 tier depending on what you are using it for. From their estimates a 6 tier would hold 80 cakes. If you do opt for those there are film covers on both sides, so don't panic if they look written on - make sure you peel the film off both sides ;))

  • Buy on Ebay - and then resell after the event.

2nd hand cake stands seem to keep their value (or they did 3 years ago when I got married!!).

I did the same sethsgran it has worked a treat for me. Occasionally I have used a cake on the upper tier and cupcakes below. I've also purchased an acrylic tiered stand similar to the above one but unfortunately it only lasted one outing and broke!!! My local cake decorating shop used to hire out their stands which is probably worth a few phone calls. HTH

  • I don't know if the cardboard ones are any good to you, but poundland have a few different designs at the moment. They come flatpacked so I would have thought it would be easy to cover with paper if the design didn't suit your theme.
