Molar/premolar root canal on I.V. sedation

Has anyone had this? My new (lovely) dentist claims that no dentist will perform this treatment under I.V. sedation.

It took a lot of pain and a lot of diazepam to get me near a dentist in the first place, so I'm really hoping this is not the case.

I couldn't get a firm answer of what kind of crown will be used either. Has anyone any experience of getting a white crown on the NHS?

Many thanks,
Dylan.

  • I have had several molar/pre-molar root canals done under IV sedation, however I have never found an NHS dentist to do this. Several dentists around my way will do this private only.

Same goes for crowns, I know in theory NHS dentists are supposed to do crowns but I've never found one who will any crown let alone white. It may be different round your way so it might be worth checking out a few dentists.

re NHS - We can not do sedation unless we have a contract for it (and are appropriately trained) ergo - No in practice NHS sedation because they generally do not dish out contracts. You can probably get it in scotland because they are still fee per item. I do white crowns on molar teeth now on the NHS. They are not as pretty as the private crowns but they are not "metal" coloured. That said I dont do many molar crowns now as I prefer composite inlays and onlays which seem to work well in my hands and are also tooth coloured.

The problem is iv sedation on the nhs is mostly used for surgical proceedures so most of the places for nhs sedation will not be set up for endodontics. The other problem is molar endodontics can take several visits to do so and again this poses problems.

Nhs dentistry is set up to get you to dental health not cosmetically perfect. On a molar tooth you will not get a White coloured crown just a metal one. On a premolar it may well be white but no guarantee.

due to phobia i asked my NHS dentist to refer me for a private filling under IV sedation

cost about £200, was done in a week, and best of all i cannot remember it.

perhaps your NHS dentist could refer you? its worth the cost.

    Thank you for responding.

Can you remember the price you paid for the root canals with the sedation?

Would my wide mouth make any difference to the colour of the potential crowns?

There's two NHS clinics that offer sedation but neither of them will do molar and premolar root canal treatment with it.

I have been referred but to a clinic that won't do all the treatment necessary under I.V. sedation. Which rather defeats the object of the entire exercise.
  • Could you ask for doctor for something stronger than diazepam?
