Column Fish tanks

Does anyone have any experience of columnar fish tanks?
With three young children, we'd love to have a decent size fish tank, and the columnar ones sound the best option, with one placed in a suitable corner of the living room.
An example here:

Does anyone have one of these? Any advice/suggestions?
Cheers,
Don

No experience myself but I am tempted to get one.
Not sure if you live anywhere near a TRADEX but could be worth a visit.

Sadly the site does not have details of what they sell.
BUT in their "Easter Trader" magazine they have a 36" tall Hexagonal Aquarium with stand for £99.99 (RRP £259.98)
QUOTE:
All aquariums come complete with the following accessories:
Internal power filter (200 litre/hour flow rate) includes carbon filter cartridge
Aquarium lighting kit
Econotherm 100w heater / thermostat
Lifelike aquarium lants (approx 12")
Floating glass aquarium thermometer
Aquarium fish net (approx 4" x 3")
1 sachet of Stress Coat Healing Powder
1 sachet of Stress Zyme Aquarium Cleaning Aid
1 sachet of fish food
I'm not sure if a 3 foot tall version fits your requirements but the price looks good.
They are also doing a 16" Hexagonal or 24" Bow Fronted Aquarium with all the above bits for £39.99 (RRP £79.99)
The "Easter Trader" offers are available from tomorrow - Tuesday 22nd March 2005 (offer goods should be available until 10th April or while stocks last)There are 10 types of people in the world. ‹(•¿•)›(11)A104.28S94.98O112.46N86.73D101.02(12)J130.63F126.76M134.38A200.98M156.30J95.56J102.85A175.93

Thanks for the info.
Ideally, I wanted something a little bigger - probably around 6 foot. But they can cost up to around £1,000!
The one you mention is only 3 foot, but at £99, sounds like a great deal!
Unfortunately, I'm in South Wales, so nowhere near any of those stores - however, for such a big saving, I'd travel!
How do you know what they have on offer? I can't see anything on the web site you quoted.
Cheers,

As I posted previously
"Sadly the site does not have details of what they sell"
I've been a Tradex member for a few months now and just a few days ago, the Easter Trader booklet dropped through my letter box.
If you want something bigger but don't fancy the £1000 price tag, you could always try eBay.
I have seen them for sale both new and used there at much more reasonable prices.
Maybe you will get one relatively local with a bit of luck. There are 10 types of people in the world. ‹(•¿•)›(11)A104.28S94.98O112.46N86.73D101.02(12)J130.63F126.76M134.38A200.98M156.30J95.56J102.85A175.93

I've always thought the tall columnar ones look impressive ... but wonder how easy they are to clean.0

With a 'want' such as this, you tend to overlook the practicalities....
I have no idea how you clean them, nor even thought about it.
Don't they clean themselves...? lol...
Or do you get those special 'cleaner fish'? Or is that just some dream I had...?

Having a 2 ft tank and a 1.5ft shaped tank i would say cleaning them would be a nightmare our 2ft one sits on unit so effectivley is 3mtrs off ground and emptying it is not the easiest of jobs and trying to catch any fish  , the tank looks beautifull but not practical, also with 3 young kids and the tank is made of plastic rather than glass - would it be safe enough? The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0

I think I remember hearing some time ago that these type of tanks were not good for the fish. Something about the water surface area, rectangular tanks are best as the volume of water in comparison to the surface area is better. I could be wrong and I'm sure someone on here would be able to confirm or say I'm talking through a hole in my head.Titch
