I was interested in studying payroll from home, ie. just a basic knowledge of wages and paye but all the online courses I found (mainly sage) are anywhere between £500 - £900.
Are there any cheap alternatives or good books so that I could swot up at home, I need to start using the payroll package at work and it's all very well me putting numbers in boxes but I like to understand the reasoning behind what I'm doing.
Especially SSP, SMP, overtime that sort of thing as I don't know much at all about how these are calculated.
Wondered if there was a clear and non too complicated book I could buy?
thanks

Why not ask your HR department to subsidise you? If it's work related then surely they should be paying for this [surely?].
Not sure if this will help though have a look all the same.
