I may be incorrect in my assumption - but as the OP states his wife is earning " loads" more than him - if her income is high, he won't be eligible for any payment of JSA and will onlt be signing on to cover his NI contribution - so as he isn't "costing" the tax payer anything in benefits does it matter if he restricts his applications?
If this is the case, the OP is right to be picky for the time being.

It may not be the same case in a year, but at this moment in time applying for a job that requires a lesser skillset is not IMO worth it. If you aren't shortlisted for the role I would think again.

Ignore everyone saying you have to do this or do that. They have no idea what you have agreed with your advisor. Your job seekers agreement details what you have agreed to do each week in order to qualify for your JSA, if it says you have to apply for 3 jobs a week then that's what you have to do, if (like mine did) it just says you have to perform a particular set of job seeking activities each week then that's what you must do. So, what does your agreement say? And obviously ignore kazzah60's post if you are on contributions based JSA, which I expect is the case if you had been in your job for at least 2 years.
  • They weren't impressed with me when I admitted that I hadn't applied for any jobs over the Christmas period. Apparently it didn't matter that only nine jobs had been added to the whole admin section in seven days and I couldn't get to any of them on the bus.

But I agree about having to fulfil your job seekers' agreement. You've signed a contract with the job centre that you will do X in return for Y.
'til the end of the line

My husband has been made redundant 3 times over the past 7 years and despite having made adequate NI contributions has never been able to claim contributions based JSA - the reasons given by the Jobcentre +
is that his occupational pension of £7000 per annum from a previous job is more than adequate for us to live on and despite challenging their decision EVERY time - the answer still comes back as no entitlement to JSA

Sorry- just realised that JSA Contributions based in not a joint calim - sorry- brain dead moment! :o
  • My irritation...

I have been made redundant in July 2011, I worked self employed for 6 months and then had to sign on due to no work. I was told I could only be given JSA on a contributions basis, which is fine. I am told to apply or "actively" seek work and fill in my booklet. I have to do a minimum of 3 a week. I always do a minimum of 10-12.

I am an entertainer, but I have applied for jobs from Cleaning through to Management in all sectors, mostly I never get a response but it keeps the Jobcentre happy.

I think you are wrong for not applying for anything apart from your last role, I can't expect to find an Entertainers role and refuse to do or try anything else! I NEED work to keep my mind active, to keep me active and feel that anyone who can say 1 job search every 2 weeks is a disgrace. I am sorry but I get treated with the same "talk down to" atitude from the JC staff. It irritates me that half of the dead heads sat in there for years seem to just get on with it and the likes of me who has always worked since the day I left school struggle to claim some help.

I have 4 months of Contributions based JSA left to come to me, after that, looks like its car sleeping time!

    Welcome to BRITAIN!
