import duty and tax?

i'm new at all this so would really appriciate your help with this please, not sure if this is the right place or not.

We imported some products to sell on ebay, however we weren't charged any import duty, after looking on google i relised it was because it was sent my EMS, we had expected to pay some so that was a nice suprise, however if we then declare this income on our tax return will they look into it and we'll get in trouble for not paying custom charges and vat? or am i over thinking things? i just don't wanna get into trouble or hand myself with a huge unexpected bill.
