P87 Clarification

Hi all, just in the middle of completing a P87 for my missus for using her own car for business use where she was not paid anything at all in terms of petrol allowances etc.

She did 7842.5 miles between July '11 and December '11.

I have worked out that 45p for those miles comes to £3529.13.

On the first page it says not to use this form if "allowable expenses" exceed £2.5k. Does that mean that I need to get a self assessment to send to them instead or do I take 20% off the £3529.13 and put the form in for that amount instead (£705.83).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, she'll need to file an SA return. In anyevent it's too early to claim as the tax year isn't finished yet.
  • Thanks, is there a particular form number that we need to get to send off in April then?

I didn't even realise that normal PAYE employees could have a self assessment to be honest, thought it was for self employed people and the such.

You need to register (or - your wife does) for SA. Do it after 6th April to prevent any complexities with the year involved :

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/register.htm

She needs to complete the employed pages (register for online and then do it that way - much easier). So will need her P60 details as well (for 11-12).

You can register for Self Assessment now,

The form you require is a SA1, you can get it here.

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/forms/sa1.pdf

There is nothing to stop you sending it in now, it means you will be registered within about 4 weeks and once the tax year finishes you can complete a return online

Expenses isn't mentioned on the form, you need to put the reason in the box "Any Other Reason"
simply say, mileage allowance over £2500.00

Once you get your UTR, register to complete the return online and get an activation pin (takes about a week) and you'll be ready to go from the Tuesday after Easter,

  • Thanks very much to both of you, makes crystal clear sense to me, have worked out all of the maths part of it so just waiting for new tax year to get it sorted.

Any idea how long they normally take to refund it?
