Pins in ankle - any experiences please?

Hi all, I broke my ankle in two places going on 3 and a half years ago, resulting in lots of pins with a couple of plates. It's not been right since really, but I've not thought too much of it because it doesn't cause problems all the time. However for the last couple of days I'll be walking around and it suddenly seems to 'give' and causes a lot of pain, this is the worst I have known it to be. I haven't knocked it or anything like that and haven't worn any different footwear so I'm a little confused really.
If it carries on I will see my GP next week, but just wondered if anyone had had a similar experience really.
