changes to contract

Hi
Just after a bit of advise re: contract of employment
OH works for a maintenance type company, been there 1.5years
He received a letter two weeks ago with changes to his contract about hours, overtime and holiday etc and asking him to sign his agreement.
Nowhere in his contract or handbook does it state that the company reserve the right to amend or vary at any time - therefore OH assumed that any changes would have to be made by consultation with both parties? As OH doesnt agree to the changes he emailed his line manager (managers request) with his concerns and asking for a response. OH doesnt want to be deliberatly obstructive but the changes mean longer hours, less overtime money and working 5years longer to receive extra holiday benefit.
Anyway, no response received, and now in the post today he has received a letter stating that if he doesnt sign the new conditions his employment will be terminated within 1month! the letter is really bullying in nature and almost feels like blackmail!
Can they change his contract? And more importantly can they terminate his employment if he doesnt sign?
Unfortunatly he is not in a union.

Yes, ultimately they can terminate his position if he doesn't agree to the new contract. His options are then to recommence employment under the new contract or be unemployed.0
