Need to raise £1,500 to move - any ideas please?

Hi everyone, this is my first post so please be kind.
I am looking for some advice, please. My husband has just got a new job 150 miles from where we currently live. We intend to move house but need about £1,500 upfront for the removal and the rent deposit. We are private tenants but our credit ratings aren't perfect so cannot get a credit card or loan from the main banks. I think we would need a loan that we could repay over six to 12 months. We don't have any valuables to sell or auction, but does anyone have any helpful suggestions of how we could raise the £1,500 over the next month or so?

Exactly how bad is your credit report? When you say you can't get a card or a loan from a main bank, so you mean at ANY rate?0

If you have poor credit then there is little chance of borrowing the money from a mainstream lender.
You will need to borrow from friends or family or save before the move.
If that is not possible, then I would recommend moving into a house share. When I moved 200 miles, I had no idea of the area and so this was a good, easy way to have no commitments to a tenancy (if just a lodger), make friends and no large upfront costs e.g. LA fees, large deposit. Just needed to pay a month in advance and I paid £150 deposit. You will have this month upfront as you have already paid your last month.
However this is more difficult if you have children or loads of stuff, although loads of stuff can be stored or disposed of (the children not so easy to

Hi zx81, thanks for replying. My credit rating is awful (I have no credit products and have been a student until recently). My husband's credit rating hovers around poor to fair. He has applied online for a bank loan and a credit card and has been declined and we are afraid to keep on applying in case it affects the rating.0

The sad thing is that once we get settled we will be better off, but it's the 'getting there' that seems to be the hard bit, if you know what I mean. I am very worried and depressed about it all, but I know that won't solve anything.0

There are lots of websites you can use to find a house share. I used spare room, but did look at others. You can chat to the other roommates before deciding.
Yes, it is annoying at times when you just want quiet or to use the kitchen on your own. But you save so much more cash by splitting council tax, utilities, sky, water, rent etc which are not much higher than if you lived on your own.
Although I am now married and have had a tenancy for 2 years in my current place, we still took someone else on as another tenant who is still there, (obviously agreed with LL) as the extra cash allows us to do more things on our own.
Just something to consider as I know that some people need their own space but can't see you being able to borrow the money (and remember to have a small fund for things such as this in case you move again or car has a major problem etc).

Hello balmk, thanks for your uplifting message! That is an excellent idea - we don't have anything like you'd see on Antiques Roadshow(!) but we could have a look at selling some furniture and, yes, it would save having to move it as well. I'll run it past hubby tonight, thanks so much.0

if you are already renting, then surely you'll be due your own deposit back? so why don't you sell your sofa and tv now, that gives you the money to move, then when you've moved and received your deposit from the current rental back, you can purchase another sofa and telly (or whatever you choose to sell in advance)0
