When do new employers get references?

Hiya
I am off work sick atm due to depression - a large amount that was contributed by my current job.
As a result of having depression I need to move out of the home I am in as myself and my fiance seperated. This has meant I need to relocate from Cardiff to Weston-Super-Mare, as I have no where else to live, and am looking to find a flat there with a friend.
So at the moment I am still off sick from the current job. In the last week though I have been looking into flats and jobs in Weston.
I now have a telephone interview at 5pm for a job there.
The start date for this job is March 26th, so hopefully I will be moved to Weston by then if I get it etc.
So I was just wondering IF they offered me the job, when they request references from my current employer?
Because obviously, as I am off sick atm, they don't know that I am looking to leave, so the last thing I want is for them to get a request for references and wonder what the hell is going on if that makes sense?
I know it's all a bit bad, just my life is a bit of a mess
Ideally, I'd be going back to that job and staying in Cardiff to try and stay stable, but I have no option to live in Cardiff anymore.
So just wondering if someone could please advise me on the referencing situation please?
Thank you very much

There is no set rules on when references are to be applied for.
Most commonly you will get a conditional offer of a job, you accept and they then take the references but have known many cases where references are never actually taken and there was a post on here not long ago about someone who's references were taken before their interview.0 -

This is common practice in education, child-care etc due to child protection/safeguarding laws etc. As I have always worked in this sector, but when had interviews out of this sector I find it a bit strange to get to the interview and they haven't got my references, lol.0 -
Would it be feasible (even for a while until you find something closer) to commute to Cardiff? I know that trains from Weston (and Weston Milton/Worle) go through to Cardiff (via Bristol), and this way you stay earning something while you're looking for a new job.
I didn't go as far as Cardiff, I moved to Worle and commuted to Bristol for three years, and although it was an hour each way on the bus (or half hour on the train), I loved that "me" time - read the newspaper/slept on the way there, and read books/chatted to friends who also commuted on the way home.We may not have it all together, but together we have it all
