Are you employed as well as self employed? Are you allowed to be self employed under the terms of your employment contract? Are you obliged to notify your employer? Check your contract if you have an existing job.

Are you going to be working out of your own home? Is this okay with your mortgage provider/landlord? Check your contract.

HMRC need to be notified within 3 months. You will need this form: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/cwf1.pdf And possibly also this one, depending on your forecast earnings: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/cf10.pdf
  • No, HMRC have to be notified as soon as you start doing work you bill someone for. There is no 3 month grace period.
  • I have left my last place of employment, I will be working in other peoples homes as a hairdresser, also as a self employed styalist in a salon

    No.

You are supposed to notify HMRC of becoming self-employed within 3 months of commencing to trade. This commencement date doesn't necessarily have anything to do with doing work you bill someone for.

HMRC do not expect the newly self-employed to spend their first day in business filling out a CWF1 and in fact, they've scrapped the fixed rate penalty for sending it in late. It is still best practice to submit the form within 3 months, but HMRC will not do anything if you miss this deadline.

The crucial things to do are to ensure you are either paying NI or have applied to be exempt from doing so and to make sure your first tax return goes in on time (as submitting that late now incurs a penalty even if no tax is due). To submit a tax return, you will need a UTR and the CWF1 will trigger this being generated if you do not already have one.

Edited to add: The link posted by awara allows the CWF1 to be submitted online, if this is the OP's preference. It can be submitted electronically or via paper, either option is fine.
  • You don't need to fill in the form - you can register over the phone.
  • thanks all will get the forms filled in
