Alternatives for Napisan

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Old Style and I wanted to say it's great :j ! I was on here reading till the early hours of this morning and have already started using soda crystals and vinegar in the washing.

My ds uses terry nappies and I wondered if anyone had any ideas for soaking solutions. We live in Spain and can't get hold of Napisan, I was using washing powder but it doesn't really stop the smells (and costs a lot), and I was worried that using bleach might damage the nappies in the long run?.

Thanks

Twig

2-3 tablespoons of white vinegar in a bucket, helps with smells and sterilising the nappies. Change the solution every 2-3 days. Bleach I wouldn't use because they go on babies skin. Non bio powder is fine, wouldn't use softner as it reduces how absorbant they are. Dry in sun where possible (lucky devil living in Spain) as this helps with stains.

  • I never soak my nappies and they still come out clean. If you use a bucket with a tight fitting lid you shouldn't have any smells. If you do still have smells make a cloth damp (maybe a muslin) and put a couple of drops of lavender oil on it and you'll have a waft of that when you open the bucket.

Yeah you can use buckets dry, but if the OP is having problems with smells after they come out of the wash, then they may need soaking. Essential oils are a good idea, I used to use Lemon or Orange.

  • Ok I know it was a long time ago but when my children were young they were all breast fed and wore terry nappies (the youngest has just turned 20) However I was advised to keep a bottle sterilised for when they wanted to drink water. The milton soltution that I made up for the steriliser each day was then tipped the next day into the nappy bucket to work on the nappies. Don't know if you can get milton in Spain.

  • Oh. We've only been using washable nappies for a few days (DS only a week old) but I'd forgotten about napisan. We never soaked them with DS1 but did use napisan in the wash. The first lot of nappies have come out lovely and clean without but I'll keep an eye on it as I don't want him to get nappy rash.

The essential oils is a good tip for the nappy bucket. I'll do that.

I dont soak either. If your having problems with the nappies still smelling after you've washed then you could have a build up of washing powder in the nappies. This happened to me and I found that the best way was to wash them through afew times with no powder.

  • NApisan is a non chlorine based bleach like ACE. You could see if there are any non chlorine based bleaches.
  • I dont soak either and when washing nappies, i do a cold wash first beacuse if if you wash on a hot wash, you bake the urine into the fabrics.

Cold washing loosens it out. Then i do a normal wash with about a quarter to half the normal amount of detergant with vinegar and essential oils to soften.

Find this works well most of the time. I wash on a 40 most of the time then once a week do a 60wash.
