Just a word of caution - if you are making claims going back several years, then you need to ask for a payable order for past years. Otherwise, HMRC will just adjust your current code to take into account back years. This is unfair as it means you effectively have to wait until then end of the tax year for your full refund.
Regarding replacement tools - I agree only these would be allowable, but capital allowances on new tools are not allowable for PAYE taxpayers.

The flat rate amount depends on your job, see the link:
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm

You get the tax on the amount you claim the current basic rate is 20% but you may be able to claim against earlier years at 22% if you have the P60s.

If you have spent £4,000 it's beneficial to you to try and claim the actual amount as it will result in a much larger refund.

You don't need the receipts just a record of expenditure, you may be able to put this together. Even if you miss some items as long as you can record a figure over the flat rate amount it's still better for you to do it on an actual basis.
  • hi there

My fella is a mechanic and has been so since the age of 16 and now is 23, and has been purchasing snap on tools. He has spent thousands of pounds and has the receipts for most things. Can he claim tax relief on these? he has had a firm who can offer services with a 40% fee for any money they claim for him.Is this any good?

    Thanks
