Usually over a tenner, a tray of the plastic version of the rods is now available for just £2.99 on Amazon.

I don't know how they match up to the wooden ones, but I'm sure they'll function very well, have great reviews and I've ordered some - so we'll see!

I can't post a link as the forum thinks I might spam? Search "Learning Resources Cuisenaire Rods Introductory Set plastic".

17/2/12 Price now increased on Amazon but available on Play for £2.99 - see post 16 from Stumpycat :)

for those who don't know, these are the stick together blocks little kids use in class when learning to count - well they used them in my day back in the 70s anyway ;)

Before you buy, please check your school uses them.

You may end up confusing your child if they are used to hundreds, tens and units blocks, Numicon or any other type of maths equipment in school.

  • The rods arrived today and I'm quite impressed as they're similar to the wooden ones I remember and not at all light or flimsy :)
    Nice bargain!

  • Me, too. Had completely forgotten about them till I saw this post. Happy days.

  • I used to love the rods at school.......and that was in the 60's, so I beat you youngsters!! :D

And they were pretty well used so I reckon they certainly go back to the 50's, if not beyond.

Wood only in my day :rotfl:

Well, in my day (primary school in the '50's) I used my fingers; toes too to count over 10!
  • When I read the word Cuisenaire I came over feeling sick and cold - hadn't heard it for probably 40+ years but instantly remembered - I hate school!

Thanks anyway OP, not your fault I was traumatised!
