Restarting a pension - transfer or not?

I'm a pension novice.

I have a private pension with Aviva (£7111.36) which is made up of non protective rights (£844.33) and protected rights (6267.03).

I understand the first amount is my private contribution and the second is the state 2nd pension contribution.

I now have an opportunity to invest with Legal & General with my new work of which they will contribute up to 3%.

What are my options and is there any impartial advice anyone wants to offer?

Should I transfer the lot or take out a second pension? what will/could happen to the S2P?

Either way, does it matter in the great scheme of things?

Doesn't matter after April - the distinction between Protected and Non-Protected Rights will be abolished.

The decision to transfer depends solely on charges, product features and investment options.

You should definitely join your employer's scheme though whether you transfer or not.

Board is not authorised to give advice. It is just comment and discussion only.

If the new one is better for you then yes. If the old one is better then no. Which is the best one?

Yes. It can make a signficant difference if your investments are not in the right place for you or you are in a plan priced for 1980s style inflation in an era where that is not happening.

protected rights are being converted to non-protected rights in april. Great news for those that contracted out.

After April, your protected rights will become non-protected rights.

This means that both pension and death benefits are more flexible.
