I think that gas is one of the most expensive forms of energy so having a gas cooker and gas fire is what is bringing your bills up, our last gas bill was 48p because we hardly use it, everything is electric in our flat and we probably pay £25 a month in electricity (with a key so we don't have bills, but we top it up with £10 roughly every 2 weeks). We don't put the heating on very often, we wear thermals and dressing gowns instead.
Well we pay less on the the gas than the electric. With no heating other than the gas fire and a fan heater which I know was taking over £4 a day we have nothing else for heating and sometimes in the bathroom its so cold I think the window is open!

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
Oh Lord, some of your stories are very upsetting. Not having heat must be very difficult in cold weather. Is there no extra payment etc. given to those in need in extra cold weather?

Here in Ireland there is an extra winter payment given for 6 months from October to April at E20 per week for qualifiers! And it was reduced to that just recently. As you all know, we have no money here, but we have always looked after the vulnerable, and for that I am happy to pay our outrageous taxes.

It might be me someday, touch wood for not though!

I always rib my work colleagues in the canteen when they are moaning about the weather, or work or anything else, and say "great day to be at work, the boss is paying for our heating! Shuts most of them up.
  • People need to make sure that they are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to. I got Attendance Allowance for my Mum which is around £270 per month. She didnt know about this, I did and its now often like a furnace in her house!

we now pay about £75 a month for both on DD about £50 to gas and £25 to electric. We have GCH and gas cooker but no fire (well only coal). We have an OWL monitor to keep a check on the leccy.

House is 1900 and is very large three storey - and hard to heat, so we tend to sit here with duvets on in the evening.

I found when i was working from home, it was really cold, as we typically only turned heating on in winter for a couple of hours in the evening.
  • The first thing we saved money on when I was made redundant was the central heating , we only use the combi for hot water and rarely use the heating, perhaps of a weekend evening . I have a couple of wood burning stoves to heat the down stairs and whilst they take time and effort they very cosy. I sell logs and kindling to others and often (like now) I have sold all of my stock and I am using off cuts of untreated timber I have got here and there as well as wood from skips. I have a big load of hard wood from an old table and chairs that was in a skip , pity as it was OK but had been broken up to get it in. They were glad to be rid of it as it gave them more space and it's better to burn as it's hard wood.
