Garmin Satnav £30 cashback opinions?

Hi

Mrs Bogtrotter bought me a shiny new Garmin Nuvilink sat-nav for my birthday to replace my old Nuvi 660 which has seen better times.

After she bought it I realised that Garmin had a £30 cashback offer. Well thought may as well have £30 in my pocket. However...

When you click on the redeem link in the Garmin.co.uk website you are taken to a domain sales-promotions.com where you enter your details. Only option is cashback by wire transfer so you have to enter your bank account details.

Being my paranoid self (being paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you :)), I wonder how safe is it to give them the details? Obviously since its not actually Garmin giving the cashback they are going to wash their hands if anything goes wrong. Also the domain seems to be registered in the Republic of Ireland making me even more wary because they are outside of UK juristiction.

Anyone any comment on this cashback offer?

  • Give Garmin a ring and ask your right to be sceptical as said above.
  • Having purchased a Sat Nav From Halfords with the promise of £30 cashback from Garmin that never got paid.
I made a complaint directly over the telephone to Garmin themselves,
I could not speak directly with anyone in management.
However, they were directing me to some other company called Sales Promotions who were suposed to be contracted to make these payments on Garmins behalf.
This was not part of the contract as advertised in Halfords, it clearly states that you send copies of proof of purchase directly to Garmin.
Having already waited over 2 months for the refund that never came i contacted Trading Standards.
My next step was to go back to Halfords with all my proofs of purchase.
I then looked around for someone in highest level management and simply told him that i was holding Halfords directly responsible for Breach Of Contract.
With that said it took the General Manager of Halfords less than half an hour to come to some reasonable conclusion as he had been in contact with Head Office.
Garmin is now going to pay me my money directly from themselves...
If this information helps someone that has the same problem as i did then great stuff go for it.;)
  • I know the feeling you describe. The cash back offer is designed so you will just give up. Even if you wrongly submit your receipt they dont let you know just reject it.

I have been trying to get my £30 back for 3 months. For the last month every time I email I get the same reply that it will be in my account in a few days. Its not the money anymore, just the fact that the whole thing seems like a con.

I have contaacted Garmin direct and that was a few days a go and they say they are flooded with cash back requests! They said I was number one and it would be in my account but it is still not.

Halfords were no help and simply did not care. I have heard from others that the Halfords Customer servuice is next to hopeless.
I will never buy a garmin product again based on this experience
  • I have also received an email from Garmin this morning advising me that the £30 cask back payment would be delayed "due to unforeseen technical difficulties"
I purchased the Garmin Satnav from Amazon and contacted them after reading the previous post. Amazon did not want to know and told me to talk directly to Garmin. I feel that there is something a bit shady here and intend to contact BBC watchdog later today. If anybody else feels the same maybe contact Watchdog and lets get a stop to this.
  • Thanks very much for the info. I was going to buy a new Garmin satnav tomorrow but I'll be going for a Tom Tom now.
  • I have also not received my £30 cash back after buying a Garmin edge 200 from Halfords. I have sent in proof of purchase x3 with no joy. I feel this is a con and have emailed Garmin that I will not be buying any more products from them.
  • :cool:I puchased a Garmin nuLink 2320LM from Halfords on 16/09/12, one of the reasons being the cashback offer. Have found out today that the offer was only valid on purchases between 01/05/2012 and 31/08/2012 and that claims could only be made up to 28 days from the date of purchase, no later than 28/09/12.
These details are amongst the terms & conditions on the Halfords site, nothing in store or on the receipt. Its never as simple as the in-store advertisement would lead you to believe!
  • I bought a Garmin Edge 200 from Halfords and claimed the £30 cashback in early August. I received the cheque on 15/10/12. It was handwritten and made no mention of Garmin; it was from an account belonging to 'European Student Services Ltd'. The letter enclosed with the cheque was a typed up A4 mentioning the Garmin promotion but wasn't on official Garmin headed paper.

I emailed Garmin and they mentioned 'problems' but didn't elaborate so I can only guess they got swamped with claims. The cashback did make the 200 a very good deal and the unit works very well. However, Garmin could have done more to reassure their customers. I'm posting this to let everyone know that whilst the payments are slow, they do come through eventually. Just noticed the new posts and decided to give an update.

Took the plunge in the end. I had an old dormant savings account that I used. I submitted my claim a few days before the end of the promotion on 31 March. About 4 weeks later £30 credited to the account.
