Inflation Threads

Just looking at a couple of recent inflation threads on here, and was surprised at the amount of posters that think that because the inflation rate has dropped, that prices are falling. Would have thought they would know better.

No, prices are actually falling at the moment.
The RPI index decreased from 239.4 to 238.0 last month.
The year on year figure is still up of course, but reducing rapidly.
Surprised at the number of posters on here who haven't figured that out yet. Would have thought they would know better....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

I'm suprised by the number of posters that look at the figures, and accept that prices are falling, without question.
Go and buy these "luxuries" at you usual outlet.....
Bread.
Milk.
Muesli.
Diesel.
Can (or 6) of lager.
A dozen eggs.
A packet of sliced, smoked ham.
etc.30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. Equity : Don't know, don't care much. Savings : That's asking for ridicule.0 -

You were right in the first place.
The only real reason for the monthly falls is the january sales.
Clothing and footwear saw a -4.9% change in January.
Furniture & household equipment saw a -2.2% change in January.
Those are the two largest changes. All the other are not really worth mentioning.
Now, look back at January 2011. Which areas saw the biggest monthly change? Clothing & footware at -5.9% and Furniture & household equipment at -1.9%.
January 2010 - C&F -5.7%, F&H -3.1%
What are the two most discounted january sales items? Clothing & Footwear and Furniture and Household items (curtains etc).
Now, if you have a look at March, when January Sales have ended, you'll see that often the biggest positive percentage changes are ..... yes, you guessed it, Clothing and Footwear and Furniture & household items, as prices "go back to normal".
This isn't about prices falling, as Hamish is trying to disingenously suggest. This is just the same january sales effect that happens each year. Look at what actually is "falling in price" and it's the standard january sales items. Happens every year. You'd think Hamish would know better.
Will he be back in March to tell us prices are rising? Of course he won't. He'd just state the discounts have ended.
The data is all out there, viewable here: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/all-releases.html?newquery=*&newoffset=0&pageSize=25&definition=77-22462%3F0 -
