Funding for an Access course

Hey guys, as some may have seen my last thread I will keep this as brief as possible.

I have been made unemployed due to injury and not knowing when I can resume my job (it's physical).

I'm now considering studying to have a better life and provide the best I can for my family.

Question is, as someone who will be unemployed, can I get an Access course (further education) discounted/free? Or is it only some courses?

Or a grant/bursary etc? I have looked and some things I have read are not so clear.

Thanks!

  • The best place to ask this question is usually the college that provides the course. They will have the latest information on funding and also know how previous or current students have got funding to complete the course. The rules can often change for these types of courses but I imagine there will be some LEA funding for the fees although that might be discretionary depending on your personal circumstances.
There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.

The Direct Gov website is a good starting point to find out more about student funding, plus there is a student forum on MSE

i realise these are institute specific - however i imagine funding is kind of similar where ever you are.

PS if you live in Yorkshire - it's absolutely GORGEOUS at Northern, highly recommend it for the views alone. (it's also highly thought of too)...

under 25, or in receipt of IS, then you should get it for free

other than that, the fee structure varies from college to college. some colleges offer it for free if you have less than 5 level 2 qualifications and the access course is your first level 3 qualification. or some subsidise the fees, so you end up paying anywhere between £500-£1k

only way to totally find out, is to contact the college you plan to study at

if in receipt of IS you can still claim this, if your course is less than 16hrs a week. other than that there is no money you can claim for living expenses

  • Thanks guys. Currently unemployed, they let me go on friday due to injury. Awaiting an MRI scan so for now I'll be on ESA for atleast the next month or so, then once I can work JSA.

    I'll contact a few colleges.

    Thanks everyone.
