Getting Credit

Hi

Just wanted some advice. I was discharged from my bankruptcy in Nov 2009.

I managed to get my car insurance and be able to pay monthly. Last year when i did this it wouldnt let me, it went straight to the "Pay it all at once" option.

So my question is this, do you think they did a credit check on me, or was i just lucky and they didnt?
Either way, by having this credit agreement, along with my exsisting mobile contract with O2 will this help improve my credit rating even though my bankruptcy will be on my credit file for another 3 years?

Thanks

  • Not sure about your car insurance having to pay it all at once. I was discharged March 2008 and I have always been able to my car insurance monthly since then.

With regards to improving your credit report its good you have an O2 contract but does this show up on your Experian Credit report?? and have you cleaned up your credit report making sure all dates are correct???

Also a very good way to improve your credit rating is to get a credit card from a company called Vanquis to start with. I have just got one (after trying capital one/Aqua and getting rejected) and just buy petrol/food on it every month and then pay the full balance off every month. This shows you can keep up repayments and you always pay the balance so looks very good when applying for future credit.

before they can do a credit check they need to ask your permission,so either you missed it,I doubt it though as normally they do make it clear if a credit check is needed or they may have changed their policy on monthly payments.
  • O2 should show up on your Experian if you're a pay monthly customer, as does Virgin Media and Co-op Cashminder. I was discharged in February 2011, but had my O2 contract prior to BR, and Virgin Media. First line of credit post BR was through Jacamo website, £120, but only used it once. I've just been accepted for the Vanquis credit card with £500 limit.
