i have decided to chance it and dust off my 23 yr old slow cooker, made by tower and 3.5litres. i have just come from asda and have bought a turkey drumstick, a reduced bag called a stew mix ( basically roughly chopped root veg) i also have a small bag of new potatoes and a rather dodgey but maybe ok first attempt of a pint of homemade chicken stock. does this sound like the sort of thing i could throw in and hope for the best? have i missed out something important? will the gravy be watery? or does anyone else have any ideas with my meagre offerings??

Just bung it all in and leave it on low all day. If the root veg are still in largish pieces you may want to soften them first, as with the pots., or the meat will be done and the veg still quite hard. Add some flour to thicken - this can be done at end if you want. Add any herbs etc you may like. The flavours all infuse so you should still get a tasty dish at the end. Once you've cooked it, you can then decide if you want to try new flavours with it ie garlic, lemon.
If you have any wine, bung a splosh in too (very technical term, that)0 -

Mix the flour/cornflour with a bit of cold water and stir in. The Tower recipe book says you can leave the lid off for the final 30 mins to thicken the sauce. Today, I removed my lamb joint and poured the juice into a pan so I could boil it up, but I could have added flour mix/gravy granules to juices in crock pot and let cook for 30 mins.
Other alternative is to rub flour into the raw meat and cook it from beginning - never done it with poultry - usually coated red meat in seasoned flour for that.
ps. I'm still working on my gravy as I've ditched using granules. Tonights was fine, although there is a gravy thread on here too.0 -
